Electrical Products Switching devices

Easy on. Easy off. Day and night. Switching with SIRIUS

The comprehensive range of SIRIUS switching devices meets diverse requirements for the switching of industrial loads. It extends from contactors, contactor combinations and soft starters to solid-state switching devices for the frequent switching of ohmic loads and motors.

The SIRIUS modular system with its components for the switching, starting, protection and monitoring of motors and industrial systems stands for the fast, flexible, and space-saving construction of control cabinets.

SIRIUS Control offers the largest available switching device portfolio in the market. A completely new generation of circuit breakers, contactors, overload relays and load feeders in seven sizes up to 250 kW is ready for use. The benefit of the modular system lies in its modular set-up of the components across all sizes. Everything fits together!

Contactors and contactor assemblies

Switching of electric drives or motors: a classic product with a decades-old functional principle interpreted in a modern and future-oriented way: these are our contactors, a generalist for switching motors.

Whether switching normal motors or high-efficiency motors (IE3), whether reversing or star-delta starting from the smallest to the largest power range, whether classic screwing or connecting using spring-cage technology or direct digital control. Our motor contactors can do all this and much more. No drive is too small or no motor start-up too heavy.

Switching with SIRIUS means high contact reliability, prolonged endurance, and usability in extreme conditions. The integration of SIRIUS contactors in engineering and selection tools supports you in digitalization.

The 3RT contactors are available with screw terminals (box terminals or flat connectors) or with spring-loaded terminals.

  • Star-delta combinations

Star-delta combinations are the reliable solution for the staged startup of asynchronous machines. The starting current is reduced by one third compared to a delta startup. The required ramp-up time up to the rated speed in star startup can be set via a timing relay.

  • Reversing contactor assemblies

For safe and reliable changes in the direction of rotation of asynchronous motors, the pre-assembled SIRIUS reversing combinations from 3 kW to 55 kW (self-assembly kit from 3 kW to 250 kW) are available. They consist of two contactors of the same rating with an NC contact from 3 kW to 7.5 kW or an NO contact and an NC contact from 5.5 kW to 55 kW in the basic unit.

  • SIRIUS 3RT.4 contactors for weak or non-inductive loads (AC-1), 3-pole up to 2 650 A
  • SIRIUS 3RT.3 contactors, 4-pole, up to 525 A
  • SIRIUS 3RT25 contactors, 4-pole, 2 NO + 2 NC
  • SIRIUS 3RT26 contactors for capacitive loads (AC-6b), 3-pole
  • 3TK1 contactors for resistive loads (AC-1), 4-pole
  • Contactors for railway applications
  • 3TC contactors for switching DC voltage, 1-pole, and 2-pole.

Contactor relays are switching devices for control and auxiliary circuits and are used for controlling, signaling and locking switching devices and switchgear.

Naturally, SIRIUS 3RH2 contactor relays come with standard-compliant connection designations and a connection system that saves both time and installation overhead. This makes them particularly suitable for practical applications. 3RH2 contactor relays and size S00 motor contactors are the same size and have an identical design – a significant advantage, particularly regarding the accessories.

They are designed for AC or DC operation and are available with screw or spring-loaded terminals. The basic version of the contactor relays is a 4‑pole design which can be extended up to eight poles by means of Snap-On auxiliary switches.

Soft starters and solid-state switching devices

Due to its exceptional functionality, the intelligent SIRIUS 3RW55 soft starter can solve even the most difficult starting and stopping tasks simply and particularly gently. Integrated smart functions (for example, pump cleaning, pump stopping, automatic parameterization, condition monitoring) help operators to run their pumps smoothly. Thanks to the SIRIUS 3RW55 Failsafe soft starters with integrated Safe Torque Off (STO) functionality, safety-related applications can also be realized.

The SIRIUS 3RF2 solid-state switching devices reliably switch a wide range of different loads with alternating voltages in 50 and 60 Hz systems.

SIRIUS 3RF2 solid-state switching devices for resistive/inductive loads:

  • Solid-state relays
  • Solid-state contactors
  • Function modules

SIRIUS 3RF2 – for almost unending activity

Conventional electromechanical switchgear is often overtaxed by the rise in the number of switching operations. A high switching frequency results in frequent failure and short replacement cycles. However, this does not have to be the case, because with the latest generation of our SIRIUS 3RF2 solid-state switching devices we provide you with solid-state relays and contactors with a particularly long endurance – for almost unending activity even under the toughest conditions and under high mechanical loading, but also in noise-sensitive areas.

Proven time and again in service

SIRIUS 3RF2 solid-state switching devices have firmly established themselves in industrial applications. They are used above all in applications where loads are switched frequently – mainly with resistive load controllers, with the control of electrical heat or the control of valves and motors in conveyor systems. In addition to its use in areas with high switching frequencies, their silent switching means that SIRIUS is also ideally suited for use in noise-sensitive areas, such as offices or hospitals.

The most reliable solution for any application

Compared to mechanical switchgear, our SIRIUS 3RF2 solid-state switching devices stand out due to their considerably longer service life. Thanks to the high product quality, their switching is extremely precise, reliable and, above all, insusceptible to faults. With its variable connection methods and a wide spread of control voltages, the SIRIUS 3RF2 family is universally applicable. Depending on the individual requirements of the application, our modular switchgear can also be quite easily expanded by the addition of standardized function modules.

Protection equipment

The availability of machines and plants is a precondition for maximum productivity. Machines and plants should therefore be reliably protected against overload from the power supply system. In the event of a failure, motor starter protectors quickly disconnect the equipment from the supply, thus preventing expensive damage. The SIRIUS 3RV2 motor starter protector provides ideal protection.

Motor starter protectors/circuit breakers

The SIRIUS 3RV2 motor starter protectors/circuit breakers are compact, current limiting motor starter protectors/circuit breakers which are optimized for load feeders. The motor starter protectors/circuit breakers are used for switching and protecting three-phase motors of up to 55/45 kW at 400 V AC and for other loads with rated currents of up to 100 A.

SIRIUS 3RV2 motor starter protectors reliably intervene in three different cases. In the event of a short-circuit – current >13 times the rated current – the short-circuit releases isolate the faulty load feeder from the power supply within only a few milliseconds. Greater damage, caused by fires for example, can thus be avoided. The motor starter protector features a lockable operating mechanism for manual closing/opening, to be used for example while carrying out repairs.

The 3RV motor starter protectors/circuit breakers can be used:

  • For short-circuit protection
  • For motor protection (also with overload relay function)
  • For system protection
  • For short-circuit protection for starter combinations
  • For transformer protection
  • As main and EMERGENCY OFF switches
  • For operation in IT systems (IT networks)
  • In hazardous areas (ATEX, IECEx)
  • As circuit breakers according to UL 489 (3RV27 and 3RV28)
  • For fuse monitoring
  • For distance protection

The overload release isolates the load from the power supply if it is loaded with an overcurrent for a certain time. Tripping is based on a specific time-current characteristic. This prevents possible damage to the load and the system. The overload release also trips in the event of phase failure or extreme phase unbalance.

Monitoring and control devices

Electronic timing relays are used in control, starting, and protective circuits for all switching operations involving time delays.

Their fully developed concept and space-saving, compact design make the SIRIUS 3RP timing relays ideal timer modules for control cabinet, switchgear, and control manufacturers in the industry.

With their narrow design, the 7PV15 timing relays are ideal for use in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems and in compressors. All 7PV15 timing relays in this enclosure version are suitable for Snap-On mounting on TH 35 DIN rails according to IEC 60175. The enclosure complies with DIN 43880.

The SIRIUS 3RA28 function modules enable the assembly of starters and contactor assemblies for direct-on-line and star-delta (wye-delta) starting. They include the key control functions required for the feeder, e.g. timing and electrical interlocking. The function modules that function as timing relays are mounted quickly and simply on SIRIUS contactors – without any great wiring effort.

The SIRIUS 3RA28 solid-state time-delay auxiliary switches which can be mounted on contactors are designed for contactor coil voltages in the range from 24 to 240 V AC/DC (wide voltage range). Auxiliary switches for control and alarm signals are used specially for switching the smallest signals for electronics applications. They are used, for example, for allowing a pump or fan to run on, or for the delayed activation of a gate drive.

Simply by being plugged in place, the SIRIUS 3RT19 timing relays enable different functionalities required for the assembly of starters to be realized in the feeder. At the same time the timing relays for mounting on contactors reduce the wiring work required within the feeder and save space in the control cabinet.

Miniature circuit breakers

Protecting electrical installations from damage

The number of electrical loads is constantly increasing, which places an ever-greater load on the electrical installation. In the event of an overload or short-circuit, miniature circuit breakers safely cut off the connected circuit and reliably protect electrical installations and equipment from damage. Miniature circuit breakers from the SENTRON portfolio are also simple to mount and install. The devices have a uniform design and, with the appropriate accessories, can be expanded by many additional functions. For industry, buildings, or infrastructure – with our versatile portfolio, you will find a suitable miniature circuit breaker for any application.

MCBs from the SENTRON portfolio meet the enhanced requirements of automated buildings and industrial power supply systems, e.g. in the automotive and semiconductor industry or in data centers. Compared to residential and functional buildings, these are usually more extensive and complex in terms of both network topology and operation. Electricity and production downtimes must be deliberately prevented in these cases using coordinated device combinations if economic losses are to be avoided. Our MCBs protect wires and cables in cases of short circuit and overloads and enable backup protection for switching devices and semiconductor protection. They are therefore a fundamental component in end-to-end protection concepts for industry and infrastructure.

Residual Current Protective Devices

More safety for humans, plants, and assets

The number of electrical consumers in residential homes and commercial buildings has increased dramatically in recent decades.

Modern appliances often have quite different characteristics in terms of current consumption than earlier equipment due, for example, to the use of frequency converters in washing machines, or switched-mode power supply units in TVs, PCs, or LED lights.

There are also decentralized power generators like photovoltaic systems or charging devices for electric vehicles.

All of this requires new protection strategies for electrical installations. This also includes appropriate residual current protection devices or residual current circuit breakers that will cut the current immediately and safely in the event of a fault.

Overvoltage Protection Devices

Millions of lightning strikes in the world every year pose a considerable risk for buildings and systems that can be damaged due to the unhindered effect of lightning currents, overvoltage, and power surges. In many cases however, it is not apparent that such damage has been caused by lightning currents, overvoltage, and power surges.

Overvoltage results in considerable damage to electrical and electronic equipment. Even brief transients in power supply lines or between electrical lines and other conductive parts (e.g. grounded metallic parts, ground) are sufficient to cause such damage. The damage patterns of destroyed lines, circuit boards or switchgear demonstrate this. Such damage can be prevented by employing suitable overvoltage protection means.

Fuse Systems

Mandatory basic protection in electrical installations

Overcurrent in electrical installations occurs because of excessive load or short-circuits and can cause serious accidents, fires, and financial damage. Appropriate protection devices have therefore been mandatory ever since electricity was first harnessed to power equipment. As a pioneer in fuse systems, we offer you the complete range of devices for the protection of cables as well as electrical devices and installations in the event of overloads and short- circuits.

Fuses are capable of safely switching off circuits as soon as an overload or short-circuit occurs. This prevents damage to electrical equipment or extended power failures. Specific variants of fuse systems are used for different applications.

Among other things, our fuses are used for protecting cables and lines, switching devices and semiconductors as well as in photovoltaics and wind power.
